Tips From Stokely Wilson,
Group portraits In group pictures, people don't know what to do with their hands or don't stand close to each other and this results in awkward and stiff looking people in pictures. I have an easy solution for this. Ask everyone to touch someone - either put their hand on someone's shoulder or place their arm around the person next to them. You will get people looking warmer and more relaxed and a few more smiles. The most natural pictures are when people are sitting or leaning against an object.
After you have taken the "official group" picture keep taking pictures as the group breaks up. I find these pictures that capture the action and are not posed are often everyone's favorites.
Family picture A fun way to get a great family picture is to ask everyone to make a hog pile. The parents lie on the ground and the children climb on top of them. Children love posing for this picture and it shows in the prints.
Get in close to people when you are taking the picture
Remember that when you take pictures of people you do not need to see their shoes! Pictures turn out much better when you get closer to the face. I think the single biggest mistake people make is they stand too far from the people that are being photographed.
Children Children are great at posing themselves and these often are the most priceless pictures - even if they have their fingers in their mouth or are crying. In my experience, adults tend to over direct kids when taking pictures. Next time you are taking pictures, sit the child or children on a blanket and snap away to get real images - this is more fun for everyone involved.
Portrait of an individual When I take pictures of an individual I always try to catch a bit of light in their eyes - it creates a wonderful mirror to their sole. To do this, ask the person to tilt their head or look up until you see a glimmer of light.
